Some reasons to obtain an appraisal:
Insurance Replacement - An insurance appraisal provides information which will assure a replacement of equal quality and value.
Estate Tax - An estate appraisal is required when the total fair market value of the estate exceeds $3,000.00.
Divorce Settlement - An appraisal for division of property.
Estimate to Replace - A hypothetical report issued to determine values previously undocumented or values for lost or stolen items which were poorly documented.
Damage Report - A damage report indicates the approximate weight loss resulting from re-cutting a damaged stone and loss of value.
Collateral - A collateral appraisal is performed for a party wishing to use jewelry or gemstones for obtaining a loan or similar business purpose.
Customs Evaluation - Customs officials may ask for proof that an item of jewelry was not purchased in a foreign country from which an individual has just returned. A full appraisal is not needed in this case, A photo with a brief description on letterhead should suffice.
Casualty Loss - The IRS will allow an income tax deduction for lost and damaged items which are NOT covered by insurance.
Conservatorship (Guardianship) When an individual becomes incapacitated, the court may require a conservator (guardian) to manage the estate.
Distribution of Property - This type of appraisal is used when a will is created. This helps ensure the heirs do not squabble over property.
